MANCHESTER CITY thumped a demoralized Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge to record only their second win at Stamford Bridge in 18 attempts.
The
first chance of the game came Chelsea's way inside the first five
minutes when Diego Costa found himself through on goal but facing the
wrong direction and with Joe Hart at his back.
The Spanish striker laid it off for Pedro whose shot beat the keeper but not Nicolas Otamendi on the line.
Costa
had the ball in the net four minutes later when Baba Rahman robbed
Pablo Zabaleta, but the Spaniard was marginally offside.
Having allowed City to
make the early running, Chelsea got themselves into the game with a
spell of controlled possession and Ruben Loftus-Cheek forced a sharp
save from Hart.
But it was predictably a City
counter-attack which produced the first goal as Kevin De Bruyne broke
with electric pace, running past Rahman before squaring to Sergio Aguero
whose shot took a deflection off Gary Cahill to put it into the bottom
corner.
It was no less than City deserved and after the
half-time interval when one might have been expected, there was no
reaction from the home side.
The crowd went to rouse their side but hands were on hips and soon City’s Argentinian maestro took full advantage.
Chelsea
lost the ball in the opposition penalty area and seconds later Samir
Nasri had slipped Aguero in behind and he clipped the ball over the
diving Thibaut Courtois.
Hiddink threw on Kenedy and Bertrand Traore in an effort to add some spice to the side.
But it heralded little and things went from bad to worse when Courtois was sent off for tripping Fernandinho.
Aguero
converted the subsequent penalty to complete a dreadful day at Stamford
Bridge in a season the end of which cannot come soon enough for Chelsea
fans.
